Opera Browser Includes Free Unlimited VPN

Opera has just released a new developer version of their web browser with a big new feature: a free, unlimited VPN.

Until now, most VPN services and proxy servers have been limited and based on a paid subscription. With a free, unlimited, native VPN that just works out-of-the-box and doesn’t require any subscription, Opera wants to make VPNs available to everyone.

To activate this VPN, choose Opera > Preferences, click Privacy and Security, and then check Enable VPN.

Note that this VPN only affects your web browsing in this version of Opera, it does not protect any other apps.

Update: There are some questions about the security of data transferred using this VPN. See this article by Graham Cluley for more info.

  1. hmm. Me wonders what the business logic behind this is. That article you link to is all nice PR talk (missing: pink pony or unicorn… :-)). Also Privacy Policy?

Still, might be something to keep at hand if you need to access something over untrusted network access points. At least Opera’s interface is less ugly than chrome or Firefox and the browser is much faster than Firefox.

  2. Kudos to Opera, but I do agree with Philippe. The business models of free VPN services often are unclear. What is their revenue model? Is my data safe? Will my traffic be monitored by the VPN provider? Are they selecting what advertising I am exposed to? It’s hard to find trusted answers to these questions …
