How To: Prevent Mass Emails via Google+

Google, in its infinite wisdom, and its desire to make Google+ the One True Social Media Experience, has decided that anyone can send you email through your Google+ profile. Now, you may think that you don’t use Google+, but you may have a profile anyway. Google has recently started requiring YouTube users to have Google+ accounts, as are Gmail users.

So you may start receiving email through your Google+ profile; it’s very possible that you don’t want this email, as it will likely turn out that spammers will use this to inundate you with emails.

Here’s how to turn it off.

Go to your Gmail page. Click in the gear icon near the top-right of the page and choose Settings, then click the General tab if it’s not visible.

Look for the Email via Google+ section:

Click the popup menu and change the setting to what you prefer; choosing No One will prevent all email from Google+. You may, however, want to allow people in your circles – if you use Google+ – to be able to email; you can choose that as well.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click Save Changes.
